Niobium, formerly called columbium, melts at 2468° C (4474° F). It is a tough, ductile, silver-gray metal having a unique combination of physical and mechanical properties. Of the five major refractory metals, it has the lowest melting temperature, density (8.57 g/cm3), and elastic modulus at room temperature (103 GPa, or 14.9 x 106), while its coefficient of linear thermal expansion (7.3 m/m - K) is the highest. Niobium is also extremely stable in a wide variety of corrosive environments including most organic acids and mineral acids with the exception of hydrofluoric acid. Major applications are in capacitors, lighting and chemical processing. Chemical Composition:

CONSIDERED THE MOST
The requirement for high-performance, lightweight space propulsion systems has prompted rapid investigation of refractory metals that are capable of withstanding high stress levels at elevated temperatures, and also have a low ductile-to-brittle transition temperature for withstanding high frequency vibrations at cryogenic temperatures. Metals which demonstrate these requirements are the Niobium-based alloys. C-103 was selected to satisfy initial design requirements because of its excellent fabricability. C-103 is considered the most "forgiveable" Niobium alloy from the standpoint of welding and spinning. Hardware which has had as much as 600" (1524 cm) of TIG weldments formed after welding and coating has withstood a 2T bend at -195°C (-320°F) after the unit had completed its duty cycle.

Although it is considered a first generation alloy, succeeding Nb-1 Zr, C-103 was developed to replace the weaker alloys, but retain the desirable formability characteristics and welding properties. This Niobium-Hafnium-Titanium alloy satisfies most rocket engine applications for temperatures up to 1482°C (2700°F) because of superior mechanical properties at all temperatures. Extensive testing of coated components has shown that the reliability of Niobium has greatly reduced program costs as the components have been used for as many as ten times the duty cycle. Niobium also offers tremendous weight savings over many other rocket engine design materials. Molybdenum threaded rods possesses a very high melting point of 2620°C, a low coefficient of thermal expansion and a high level of thermal conductivity. Because molybdenum threaded rods have the ability to withstand extremely high temperatures without changing shape, expanding or softening significantly, they are ideal for high strength / high temperature applications that are shielded from oxygen. Exposing molybdenum fastener to oxygen above 600°C will cause them to readily oxidize.
As a result, molybdenum threaded rods find their way into high temperature vacuum furnaces, glass production, military and space applications where oxygen is not present.

Tantalum fasteners are best known for its unmatched corrosion resistance and chemical inertness. Tantalum fasteners have a similar corrosion resistance to that of glass, but all of the typical mechanical and electrical properties of a metal.
Tantalum fasteners are also extremely stable at high temperatures, since tantalum has a melting point around 3000°C. High temperature applications require vaccum or inert gas since tantalum may embrittle when used in oxygen rich environments above 250°C.  Tantalum fasteners are also one of the most bio-compatible metals available and is also radio-opaque due to its high density (16.68 g/cm3).

Common Tantalum Fastener Grades

Tantalum (Commercially Pure)
Commercially pure tantalum metal is 99.95% pure tantalum has some o the best corrosion resistant properties of any metal. While its corrosion resistance is exceptional, it is relatively soft and mechanically similar in strength to copper.
Tantalum 2.5% Tungsten (Ta-2.5W)
This grade of tantalum alloyed with 2.5% tungsten provided better overall strength while maintaining its exception corrosion resistant properties. For tantalum fastener applications this is usually preferred.
